New Public Holiday in Poland: February 14

Starting in 2025, February 14 will hold dual significance in Poland as it becomes the National Day of Remembrance of Home Army Soldiers, commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of the Polish Underground State during World War II. The Sejm unanimously passed the decision, with all 429 deputies voting in favor and none against.

While this new public holiday honors the fallen and living Home Army soldiers, the day is intended to be symbolic, aimed at deepening citizens’ historical awareness through commemorative events, lectures, and celebrations.

New dimension with its historical significance

February 14, already celebrated as Valentine’s Day, now takes on a new dimension with its historical significance. While this year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, offering a long-weekend opportunity for some, the National Day of Remembrance is designed to be a day of reflection rather than a break from regular responsibilities.

Honoring the Heroes of the Polish Underground State

The establishment of this holiday underscores Poland’s commitment to preserving the legacy of the Home Army, whose members resisted occupation and fought for the nation’s freedom during one of its darkest chapters. On this day, events will be held nationwide to educate citizens about the Home Army’s heroic contributions and sacrifices.

As Poland embraces this dual significance for February 14, the day promises to balance love and remembrance, honoring both personal relationships and the collective heritage of the nation.
