10 newborn babies were killed in a massive fire at the Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra. The fire broke out around 2 am at the Newborn Care Unit. 17 babies were admitted at the Special Newborn Care Unit in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district, at the time of incident. The fire brigade personnel succeeded in rescuing 7 out of 17 babies.

The preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit could have caused the tragedy. All the infants killed in the blaze were between a month and three-months old. Three to four infants were burned to death while the rest of the casualties happened as oxygen supply was cut. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
