Kiran George triumphed in the men’s single, defeating Singaporean Jia Heng, at the Polish International 2021 held in Zakopane on Sunday. The second important tournament of Poland was organized by the Polish Badminton Association under the patronages of the Badminton World Federation. As many as 29 Indian badminton players took part in the four-day tournament that started on Thursday.
Kiran from Kerala, India ranking world No. 101, beat the 259th-ranked Jason Teh Jia Heng of Singapore 13-21, 21-14, 21-13 in the final which lasted 46 minutes. This was 21-year-old Kiran’s second crown since his win at the JE Wilson International Series in Ghana in 2019. Earlier this month, Kiran George had topped the national trials and made a place in India’s squad for the Thomas Cup to be played in October.
In men’s doubles, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Partheek turned out to be the best, defeating Rory Easton and Zach Russ 21-18, 27-25 in the final for their maiden title. The match lasted 39 minutes. This was the duo’s second straight final after the Ukraine International earlier this month.
In the women’s singles, Samiya Imad Farooqui stood out for India, finishing runners-up after losing 21-15, 16-21, 21-12 to Jaslyn Hooi of Singapore in the final.
The new pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela took into the women’s doubles final with a amazing win in the semi-finals. The duo recorded victory over Sweden’s Johanna Magnusson and Clara Nistad earlier in the day, displaying a splendid performance to post a 19-21, 21-16, 21-18 victory in 52 minutes. However, later in the day, they went down to Margot Lambert and Anne Tran of France 10-21, 18-21 in 38 minutes.
