Poland Braces for Sudden Weather Shift: Snowfall and Arctic Chill Followed by Potential Record-Breaking Heatwave

Poland is in for a dramatic weather rollercoaster in the coming days, as the country braces for a final blast of Arctic air, followed swiftly by a potential surge in summer-like temperatures.

On Wednesday, April 9, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued a series of first-degree weather warnings affecting nearly the entire country—excluding only parts of the western region. The alerts cover a range of hazardous weather phenomena, including icing, frost, strong winds, and both regular and heavy snowfall. Many of these warnings are expected to remain in effect until the morning of Thursday, April 10.

According to meteorologists, the cold front moving into Poland originates from the Arctic north and is expected to bring snow and sub-zero temperatures, especially in the eastern regions. On Thursday and Friday (April 10–11), temperatures may drop to -4°C in the northeast, marking what could be the last significant cold wave of the season.

However, the cold spell will be short-lived. Forecasters predict a significant temperature rebound starting over the weekend (April 12–13), with Sunday bringing a dramatic change. Thermometers across the country could show as much as 21°C, and the warm trend is expected to continue into the following week.

In fact, meteorologists are already eyeing Thursday, April 17, as potentially the warmest day of the month. In the Łódź region, temperatures could reach 25°C, and some forecasts suggest certain areas might even experience a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 30°C. If confirmed, this would mark the earliest heatwave ever recorded in Poland, surpassing the current record of 30.7°C set on April 22, 1968, in Sulęcin.

The warmest April day on record remains April 29, 2012, when Słupca in the Wielkopolska region saw a scorching 32.5°C.

Experts point to the delayed breakdown of the polar vortex as the key reason for this year’s unusual weather pattern. The portal twojapogoda.pl noted that this disintegration, typically occurring earlier in the season, has been delayed by several weeks—resulting in lingering cold and unexpected fluctuations.

Poles are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and take precautions amid this period of volatile and extreme weather transitions.
