The good news is, YES! the work is in progress. The prototype of the Wroclaw vaccine against COVID-19 is ready. Now he has tests on mice. To conduct them, you must have the consent of the ethical committee, which is why scientists working on the vaccine from the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław are getting ready to submit the relevant documents. They plan to do so by March 20.
– At the moment, we are conducting in vitro experiments, i.e. in test tubes. These are all those laboratory experiments that are necessary to gather observations and experiences. We analyze them in the direction of selecting one component, which should be the substance that is to elicit a response to the viral particle. And then there will be in vivo tests, that is, on animals, explains Professor Andrzej Gamian, director of the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław.
There are several different types of vaccines. As scientists say, they can be based on mRNA, DNA, a weakened virus or completely inactivated. One of the types are also subunit vaccines, i.e. based on a fragment of a given microorganism or virus. It is the latter type that is being worked on in Wrocław. Interestingly, Polish scientists assume that their vaccine would be administered not as an injection, but as a nasal spray.
The project ends in October. By then, the prototype is to be tested. When can a vaccine be ready for human administration? Its creators emphasize that after the research stage, they cannot deal with the next stages – it is beyond their capabilities. They will look for help – for example, producers.
