Polish scientists have discovered a gene that increases the risk of falling severely ill, or even die from Covid-19. This discovery might help identify people who are most at risk from the disease. Health ministry of Poland also plans to include genetic tests when it screens patients for potential Covid-19 infections as soon as the end of June.
Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in genes, chromosomes, or proteins. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.
The discovery may explain one of the reasons behind Poland’s high Covid-19 death count. It is estimated that the gene could be present in about 14% of the Polish population, compared with around 27% in India.
