India’s Endurance Cyclist John Gwite Sets National Record at Race Around Poland

Indian ultra-endurance cyclist John Gwite has etched his name into the record books by setting a new national benchmark at the Race Around Poland (RAP), one of Europe’s most grueling long-distance cycling competitions.

Gwite completed the demanding 3,600 km course in an impressive 237 hours (9 days and 21 hours), smashing the previous Indian record of 274 hours. The feat not only underscores Gwite’s extraordinary stamina and determination but also places him firmly among the elite in the global endurance cycling community.

Held annually, the Race Around Poland traces the perimeter of the country, with cyclists navigating a staggering 31,000 meters of elevation gain—equivalent to climbing Mount Everest nearly four times. The event is widely regarded as a gateway to the prestigious Race Across America (RAAM), and is known for its extreme physical and mental challenges.

What makes the RAP particularly brutal is its unsupported format. Riders compete solo, without the assistance of team cars, crew support, or external aid. They must rely entirely on their own planning, strategy, and resilience to survive both the route and the elements.

Over 60 international ultra-cyclists from around the world participated in this year’s edition, with Gwite emerging as one of the standout performers. His record-setting effort represents a significant milestone for Indian endurance sports, a domain that is gradually gaining recognition and traction in global arenas.

Speaking after the race, Gwite described the experience as “the most mentally and physically demanding challenge” of his career. “There were moments when quitting seemed like the only option, but I knew I was racing not just against time, but for every Indian who dares to dream beyond limits,” he said.

The achievement is expected to inspire a new generation of Indian cyclists to explore ultra-endurance formats, which demand not just physical fitness, but strategic planning, mental toughness, and unwavering perseverance.
