Polish Airspace Violated by Russian Drones: Objects Shot Down, NATO on Alert

Warsaw, September 10, 2025 — Polish authorities confirmed that several Russian drones violated the country’s airspace overnight during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. The Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) reported that air defense systems were activated, resulting in several drones being shot down. Emergency services remain on high alert, and NATO has been notified amid rising regional tensions.

Multiple Airspace Breaches During Overnight Attack

The incident occurred between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning when Russia launched another massive wave of drone strikes targeting Ukraine. According to the Operational Command, several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) crossed into Polish territory.

“During today’s attack by the Russian Federation on objects located in Ukraine, our airspace was repeatedly violated by drone objects,” the Operational Command stated.

Upon detecting the intrusions, Polish forces launched an operation to track and neutralize the drones. “On the commander’s order, weapons were used to shoot down the objects,” the statement said. Search teams, including the Territorial Defence Forces (WOT), have been deployed to locate drone debris.

Drone Hits Residential Building in Lublin Voivodeship

One of the drones fell on a residential house in the town of Wyryki, located in the Lublin Voivodeship. While no injuries were reported, the impact caused significant material damage. Emergency services were dispatched immediately.

Authorities urged residents not to approach any drone fragments and to report findings to the police.

Government and NATO Response

Polish President and Prime Minister have been briefed on the situation. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk confirmed that “all services are in action” and appealed to citizens to remain calm and follow official instructions.

Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz added on platform X (formerly Twitter):

“We are in constant contact with NATO command. Air defense systems were used against enemy objects. Please remain calm and follow updates from the army and state services.”

NATO has been informed about the incident, and coordination efforts are ongoing to ensure regional security.

International Reactions

Global media outlets have closely followed the developments:

  • Reuters reported that this is the first time since the start of the Ukraine war that Poland and NATO have actively engaged their air defense systems within Polish airspace.
  • Financial Times called the event an “unprecedented violation” of Polish sovereignty and “an act of aggression that created a real threat to the safety of citizens.”
  • The Guardian highlighted that Polish fighter jets scrambled after receiving early warnings from Ukraine about possible border violations.
  • Sky News reported that “Poland activates NATO’s defense after Russian drones repeatedly violated airspace.”
  • CNN reminded audiences of NATO’s Article 5, which considers an attack on one member an attack on all.

Heightened Readiness Along Eastern Border

The Polish military has raised air defense and radar reconnaissance systems to their highest state of readiness. The most affected regions include Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lubelskie voivodeships, where residents have been advised to stay indoors until further notice.

Military analysts warn that Russia’s escalating drone strikes could be part of a new strategy aimed at overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses and testing NATO’s response capabilities.

What’s Next

Prime Minister Tusk is expected to address the nation later today.

Authorities continue to urge vigilance and caution:

“If you encounter drone fragments, do not approach them. Contact the police immediately,” the Operational Command advised.

With tensions escalating, Poland’s actions mark a significant turning point in NATO’s response to Russian aggression near its borders.
