Poland’s Dagmara Shines in India at Volleyball Championship

Dagmara Skirzynska, a 22-year-old athlete from Gdansk, Poland, has captured attention with her exceptional performance in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup held in Delhi. While she initially made her mark as a libero in volleyball, her transition to Kho Kho has been equally remarkable, showcasing her agility, speed, and strategic thinking.

Dagmara’s sporting journey began at the tender age of nine when she discovered her passion for volleyball. Growing up in northern Poland, she competed at the school level and later pursued the sport at Gdansk University. However, her path took an unexpected turn when she was introduced to Kho Kho three years ago by a management company representative from Satyam.

“It’s a crazy game and something different for me in Poland,” Dagmara shared. “It reminds me of games we used to play in my childhood, like in a Polish barrack. The game is very similar to Kho Kho, so I thought it would be fun to try.”

Now the captain of Poland’s national Kho Kho team, Dagmara has embraced the sport with enthusiasm. Her background as a volleyball libero—a defensive specialist requiring quick reflexes and anticipation—has proven invaluable in Kho Kho. “Being a libero required swiftness and foresight, which are the same qualities needed in Kho Kho,” she explained.

From Volleyball Courts to Kho Kho Fields

Dagmara credits her seamless transition to her experience on the volleyball court. “In volleyball, you must think ahead when attackers spike, and in Kho Kho, you need similar foresight to plan your moves,” she said. Her unique skill set has not only elevated her game but also inspired her students back home.

A physical education student at Gdansk University, Dagmara has been promoting Kho Kho among her school students, sparking interest in the sport across Poland. “It all began when Kho Kho was introduced at our university. Since then, it’s been an incredible experience,” she recalled.

Championing New Frontiers

Dagmara’s leadership and dedication have brought the Polish Kho Kho team into the spotlight, highlighting her adaptability and passion for sports. Her presence at the Kho Kho World Cup in Delhi marks a significant milestone in her athletic career and serves as a testament to the sport’s growing global appeal.

As the tournament unfolds, Dagmara’s story is a beacon of inspiration, bridging cultures through sports and proving that with determination, new challenges can lead to extraordinary achievements.
