India-EU Ties Take Center Stage as Poland Assumes EU Presidency

Poland assumed the presidency of the European Union (EU) on January 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a six-month term. During this period, strengthening cooperation with India will be a key focus, according to Polish Charge d’Affaires to India, Sebastian Domzalski. The presidency comes at a time when both sides are seeking to deepen ties across various domains, including trade, security, and development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland on August 21–22, 2024, was a significant milestone in bilateral relations. It marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years, underscoring the growing importance of the partnership between the two nations.

Under the theme of ‘Suraksha, Vikas, Pragati’ (Security, Development, Progress), the Polish Presidency aims to address critical issues in India-EU relations. Domzalski emphasized the urgency of enhancing collaboration in light of ongoing global and regional challenges.

“Given the difficult geopolitical environment in Europe and all around the globe, our priority will be security,” Domzalski stated. “Here in India, we are looking forward to continuing our contribution to the EU-India relationship. We aim to bring India and the EU closer through discussions on the free trade agreement and hope to convene the EU-India Summit early this year.”

Poland’s leadership comes as the EU and India are poised to expedite negotiations on a trade pact and strengthen their strategic partnership. Later this year, India is expected to host the much-anticipated India-EU Summit, further highlighting the deepening engagement between the two parties.

This presidency presents an opportunity for Poland to advance EU-India ties, leveraging its leadership role to address shared priorities and foster closer cooperation in a volatile global landscape.
