Indefinite Driving Licenses to Become Obsolete: Here’s How to Check If It Affects You

Big changes are coming for drivers in Poland as indefinite driving licenses will soon be a thing of the past. The shift stems from the adoption of a uniform driving license model across the European Union, effective since January 19, 2013.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the new driving license document has a standard validity of 15 years. For professional categories such as C and D, licenses will continue to be issued for a maximum period of 5 years. Importantly, while drivers will need to replace their documents after these periods, retaking the driving test or undergoing medical examinations is not required—unless the license was previously issued for a limited time or covers professional categories. Crucially, driving entitlements themselves do not expire.

How to Update Your Driving License
To renew your driving license, simply visit your local city or county office with the following:

  • Your current driving license
  • A recent photograph
  • A fee of approximately PLN 100
  • A completed application form

About 15 million Polish drivers currently hold licenses issued under the “old rules,” allowing them to drive indefinitely. But how can you tell if your license is indefinite? It’s simple:

  1. Check the reverse side of your license (column 11).
    • If no expiry date is listed for your category, your license is indefinite.
  2. Alternatively, verify this information using the mObywatel mobile application.

Uniform Licenses by 2033
For licenses issued after January 19, 2013, an expiry date is already listed in column 11. By 2028, all drivers will need to transition to the updated uniform licenses. The replacement process is expected to span several years, from January 19, 2028, to January 18, 2033.

Drivers with indefinite licenses have no immediate cause for concern. However, starting in 2028, they will need to update their documents. Failure to do so could result in steep penalties, with fines starting at PLN 1,500.

Prepare for the Change
While there’s still time, it’s worth keeping this change on your radar. As the deadline approaches, offices may see long queues, so planning ahead is advisable.

Stay informed and ensure your driving license stays valid to avoid unnecessary fines and hassle.
